History

In the mid 1940’s, a group of returned servicemen had the idea of forming a social club. They met in the sub-branch rooms – the Digger’s Hall, a wooden building which still stands today in Bosworth Street – to talk about their idea. All of them were members of the RSL Sub-Branch and all were determined that the horrors that they experienced in war would be worthwhile through the difference they would make to their community now that they had returned.

The planning for a memorial area led to the purchase of an area of waste land on the corner of East Market and Francis street which was partially cleared and covered in brambles and railway rubbish. The original intention was to build a clubhouse with a bowling green and tennis court but as building materials were in short supply following the war, some true Aussie spirit was needed. Bricks were unattainable but as two of the men worked for Nepean Sand and Gravel and one other had a truck or two, a large load of crusher dust found its way to the site of the new club and the men went about making concrete blocks for themselves.

An American that lived locally supplied a few poker machines on commission which wasn’t legal but at the same time the club didn’t have a liquor license so a keg was placed on the end of the bar and drinking glasses were rented. These young men were more interested in doing good things than doing things properly and at this stage there were only about 20 members so things were under control.

The extensions to the club kept coming as the communities growing needs were met and the club worked hard in the local community to benefit the local people. Starting with a project to help the town after it was hit by six floods and a bushfire in just one year, the community work gathered pace until today the club has been one of the leading positive impacts our community has ever experienced. From sponsoring more than 80% of junior sporting teams in the area, to donating 88 acres of land for Bensons Lane Sporting Complex to be built, through to operating the leading aged care facility in town as well as the fitness centre, a hairdressers, a function centre and much more.
